Welcome to Chiller.
Now that we’ve successfully launched the network and the Web site, we’d like to take a little time to introduce ourselves.
First off, a lot of us at Chiller are fans of the genre just like you. A few of us have even been around long enough to remember when there was no real community of horror movie buffs. Or, at least, none that we knew of. The first hint that there were others like us probably came at the grocery store, with the discovery of “Famous Monsters of Filmland.” The magazine was loaded with rare black and white photographs of classic monsters, and was graced with unforgettably vivid cover paintings that brought the characters to life and verified that, yeah, they really were kind of cool after all.
As we grew up, it became increasingly apparent that the stuff we’d dismissed as B-movie cheese may, in fact, have been something more. Publications like “Cinefantastique” showed us that horror was a safe haven for topics that were otherwise off-limits, and screenwriters had been using the genre to address subjects like sexuality, racism, religion, McCarthyism and nuclear Armageddon.
With the advent of cable television, VCRs, DVDs, HD-TV and video-on-demand, things that were old became new again. Studios went to great lengths to restore films that had been neglected for years, and gradually, they returned from the dead, looking better than ever. All of this has helped open up the world of classic horror to a whole new generation of fans, and modern-day filmmakers such as Tim Burton and Peter Jackson have kept the spirit alive.
We’re really excited to have the opportunity to bring you programming covering a wide spectrum of this fascinating genre. So stay with us as we dig through vaults in search of spooky films and television shows for our schedule. And feel free to let us know what you’d like to see by logging on to our Witch List. We’ve made it our business to be your best source for things that go bump in the night.
