THE DARE 2 DIRECT
QUICK START GUIDE

Here's a handy overview of things you'll need to know about Chiller's Dare 2 Direct Short Film Contest. It's not a substitute for the official rules, which you must read and agree to. It's just, you know, handy.

  • Your film MUST be between three and six minutes in length. No longer. No shorter. We don't want any quivering bottom lips. Make sure you can tell your story within that window.
  • Need music? Tracks are available as part of our Toolbox of Terror. Click Here.
  • Submissions must be postmarked between June 2nd and July 28th. All submissions must be received by August 4th.
  • Make sure you have permission to use the locations, appearance and property of others in your film (including artwork, TV and film clips, trademarks and music), or that you are otherwise allowed to use them. It's a good idea to get this permission in writing. Chiller has posted some sample contracts that may be helpful to you, but you don't need to use these, and you're free to use something else that works better for you. Chiller's sample forms may not satisfy your needs or the law in your area, so please check with an attorney. Chiller isn't providing you legal advice by giving you these forms, and won't be able to answer any questions about them for you. For sample contracts, Click Here.
  • Your film must be in one of the following formats: MiniDV, DVCAM, HDV(1080i), Beta SP, DigiBeta, HDCAM videotape, CD-ROM data disk, DVD-R data disk (with quicktime .mov), Video disk (Video_TS folder), HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. The submitted format should be color corrected to adhere to CCIR-601/ITU-R 601 NTSC broadcast specs, have peak audio levels between -10db and -8db, and have an aspect ratio of either 16:9 or 4:3.
  • Mail your film, signed Dare 2 Direct rules, and signed contracts to:
  • Chiller
    3000 W. Alameda Avenue
    P-600
    Burbank, CA 91523-2000

  • You will receive an e-mail from Chiller letting you know if your film has been approved.
  • Make sure to read our Fearful Filmmaking 101 primer. It's got lots of useful creative advice. You're kind to small animals and children—why not be nice to the people who sit through your movie? It's available here.
  • If your film is approved, it will be uploaded to our Web site. Online voting begins September 2nd. Finalists will be contacted October 7th.
  • Finalists and winners will be announced on Chiller's Dare 2 Direct Film Festival, which airs Halloween night, October 31st.
  • Have a question? Check out the Dare 2 Direct message boards, Click Here, or e-mail us at Dare2Direct@chillertv.com.
